What are Truchet tiles?

Truchet tiles are square tiles carrying a simple mark, often a pair of quarter-circle arcs, laid down in random rotations. Sebastien Truchet first wrote about them in 1704. Each tile is dull on its own, but together they form winding paths and patterns nobody planned.
